Centred around the arrival in Belfast in 1968 of Benny Brannigan, fresh up from the provinces, 'Buying Time' is the insidiously evocative account of the loves and lives of a group of people whose fates are closely intertwined with his, from Benny's own relationship with the love of his life, Deirdre, to the tragedy which awaits the golden couple Carol and Charlie, to the bitter-sweet story of the big-hearted Sammy and his devotion to the married Liz whom he met while out dancing one night and could never forget. Among a pack of sympathetic and intriguing characters, the streets of Belfast play the greatest role of all as the sometimes joyous, sometimes teeming, sometimes troubled backdrop to the dreams and heartbreaks of ordinary, yet often quietly heroic, lives.
