Charles J. Gelso, PhD, is Emeritus Professor and Co-Director of the Maryland Psychotherapy Clinic and Research Laboratory at the University of Maryland. He has published widely in the area of the therapeutic relationship, with particular emphasis on relational constructs of working alliance, real relationship, transference, and countertransference. His most recent books are The Real Relationship in Psychotherapy: The Hidden Foundation of Change, and The Therapeutic Relationship in Psychotherapy Practice: An Integrative Perspective. He has been editor of major journals in counseling psychology, and the recipient of many recognitions, including the Leona Tyler Award, the top award in counseling psychology.
Elizabeth Nutt Williams, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology at St. Mary's College of Maryland and has served as department chair and dean. She received her bachelor’s from Stanford University and her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland. She’s a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), served on the APA Council of Representatives, and was president of the Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy. She has published two books: Counseling Psychology (with Charles Gelso) and The Oxford Handbook of Feminist Multicultural Counseling Psychology (with Carol Enns) as well as numerous empirical articles on psychotherapy process, feminist/multicultural counseling, and qualitative research.
