Live Like the Banyan Tree: Images of the Indian American Experience: An Exhibition at The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies
Description:
Nearly a million Indians came to the U.S. in the last 3 decades of the 20th century, bringing with them extraordinary professional & business talents, as well as a new set of social, cultural & religious sensibilities. This exhibition examines the ways in which this quiet migration has influenced the lives & outlooks of Indian immigrants & their children, & the ways in which their presence is shaping American society. In 1996 an oral history project on South Asians in the Philadelphia region was initiated. The guest curator for this exhibit, Leela Prasad, conducted most of the background & field research, developed the organizing themes for the exhibition, wrote the exhibition text, & edited this volume. Color & black & white illustrations.
