The Silversteens And Silvermont
Description:
In 1901 a young man, whose family had escaped the policy of Russification and the pogroms, established the first of a number of tanning, extracting and logging companies in Western North Carolina. He had grown up in Pennsylvania and apprenticed as a tanner. He married a well educated woman. In 1917 Joseph Silverstein changed his name to Silversteen. Elizabeth, his wife, was active locally in Rosman and Brevard and in time rose to national prominence in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Their daughters Miriam, Dorothy and Adelaide were highly gifted. Miriam managed much of the father’s business, Dorothy majored in organ, piano and voice, and Adelaide went on to national prominence as a vocal performer and recorder. This is the story of their relationships and achievements and also the story of their home, Silvermont.
