Abraham A. Davidson Photographs 1964-2004
Description:
Abraham A. Davidson has been teaching Art History on the college level since 1963(and has written six books and many articles and reviews on American and Modern Art), but has been photographing seriously longer than that. Here are fifty-eight black and white photographs taken in a wide variety of places-Paris, Jerusalem, Vienna, London, Cork, San Juan, B'nai Brak, Killarney, New York, Myrtle Beach, Philadelphia, northern Michigan, Rockport (MA.), Reeds Beach (N.J.)-that he considers among his best.
Davidson's book opens avenues of the past and appears to be a sort of photo journalism sans text. But the images are implicit even without a narrative. They introduce the viewer to personal experiences and demonstrate how one person looked upon the world during a life time.
Some of the images command special attention where the author allows intimate glances into his own past. Those images, genuine mile stones, have special intrinsice artistic values.
Especially moving are those documents, domestic snapshots, where the author allows us to enter into his private realm and shares happy memories of his past.
Emotional sentiment competing with objectivity is the most significant legacy of this attractive volume.
Dr.George T. Radan
Professor Emeritus of
Art History and Archaeology
Villanova University
Whether by abstract multiple exposure or by direct representation, as in the happy faces of Israeli yeshiva boys who conjure up the iconic image of starved Holocaust survivors, Davidson's work demonstrates that photography is capable of irony, mystery and depth.
Eric Lager, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry
PHOTOGRAPHS is the thinking man's book of pictures. Davidson depicts the intellectual and emotional depths of the human experience. He sensitively portrays the world around him, giving a personal perspective of his vision.
