In southern literary tradition, A Yellow Watermelon, using realistic language, takes you into the cotton fields, streams, churches, whiskey stills and the heart and mind of a young boy as he struggles with the hypocrisy and wonder of the small world around him in rural South Alabama, amid the lingering effects of the Great Depression and the current effects of racial division. It began at the saw mill, where the young boy is befriended by an escaped black convict named Jake, who secretly begins to teach him the inequities of life, the wisdom to survive it, and the joys in between.
