Sir Clements Robert Markham (1830-1916) after serving on the Franklin search expedition in the Arctic regions, resigned from the Royal Navy to explore the eastern slopes of the Andes. He held key positions in the Hakluyt Society and the Royal Geographic Society, and collected first-hand information on a wide variety of topics, including the importance of Andean quinine - a cure for malaria - for the East India Company (he also did explorations and held administrative posts in India).
