Excerpt from Memoirs of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 of 2: From Its Commencement to the Year 1776, Inclusive, as Relating to the State of South-Carolina, and Occasionally Refering to the States of North-Carolina and GeorgiaThe middle of September was an eventful era, in the revolutionary history of south-carolina; for, on the 15th day of that month, the Provincial Troops,* by order of the Council of Safety, took possession of Fort Johnson, commanding the entrance of Charles town harbour - the commons-house of Assembly was dissolved, by the proclamation of Governor Campbell - and, his Excellency, alarmed for his own personal safety, left Charlestown, and took refuge on board the Tamer, sloop of war, then lying in the roads.
