At times it seemed as if the coloss'us would be unable to endure the strain any longer, - as if he would release the grip of his hands and feet upon the banks and send everything pitching into the deep river below. But every time another train dashed across, the giant would merely shudder; his back would bend in soft, elastic fashion, and the train would glide over him like steel skates over ice.
