Increasingly disaffected Clinical Psychologist William Crotus harbors a great deal of malcontent regarding his chosen profession, culminating one day when he simply walks away from his practice and personal life. Ending up in the unusual position of drifter with a doctorate, Will's rather solitary existence is forever altered after a chance encounter with James Thownthont, a mechanical engineer that recently abandoned his own job and everything that went along with it. Despite the vast differences between them, the two men are united by the deep similarities of self and the situation they share. The lives of the pair change drastically with the addition of the third member of what will become an inseparable triumvirate; business tycoon and self-made man David DeSalle, who is grossly dissatisfied with his own life, despite having acquired a level of success and affluence far beyond the greatest aspirations of others who spend their lives in the pursuit of wealth. First person narration shifts between the three main characters throughout offer a transparency into each of their minds as thoughts, actions, and paths conflate and diverge. The result is an unfiltered look at the connections we make, as well as the triumphs and tragedies that we all share regardless of background or social status; the experiences which serve to define us as individuals, and unite us as human beings.
