Albert Ellingwood, raised by a single mother and growing up in mountain towns, became a Rhodes Scholar, Professor and Assistant Dean at Northwestern University. He was the author of three textbooks and numerous scholarly articles. His first book, based on his PhD thesis of 1918, has recently been reprinted. He introduced British Rock Climbing techniques to America and used those techniques to lead many first ascents, including the previously "impossible" Lizard Head in 1920. He was a pioneer climber in Colorado and Wyoming. Ellingwood Point is named for him. As a Colorado College student, he acted in French. He later became an accomplished pianist opera singer, and figure skater. He also darned socks in camp on the eleven summer expeditions he led.
