Busted!
"Man, here I am locked in this grimy hellhole in Mexico. Roger, you must be nuts to end up here. What rotten lousy luck! What are the odds for us getting busted the way we did? There were only 10 seconds out of a million when we were exposed without radio cover. Something weird is going on here! Maybe God got me busted and is trying to tell me something, but that's ridiculous! This must be one huge miserable coincidence. We have 3 tons sitting in Rosarita Beach. I can't give up now..."
Those were some of my thoughts on that sorry "May Day." It was May 1st, 1974. I bought my way out of that Mexican jail. They had a better case against Steve, but we purchased his way out of the infamous La Mesa prison eleven months later.
We had people flying into San Diego from several parts of the United States with literal stacks of cash... entire coffee tables covered with money. One time my partners played Monopoly with real money. We snorted coke with rolled up hundred dollar bills. Life in the fast lane.... I mean crazy lane.
But then... more coincidences kept happening. Everything I touched in early 1975 went haywire. We lost three loads in a row, and had eleven of our workers in San Diego County jail. Hundreds of kilos were on credit to us from some very dangerous Mexican nationals in Tijuana. One family put a contract on me. I decided it was too much like the movies and headed for Alaska.
Little did I know as I hit the road heading north on Interstate 5 that I was about to embark on a radical adventure beyond my wildest imagination.
This book is not only an adventure story, but a spiritual journey and a road map to real life. It is also gives insight into several periods of grass roots, contemporary American history.
