When I first ran for office in 1989, I won that first election by a mere 200 votes out of 17,000 votes cast. I informed my campaign team that we were starting our reelection campaign the day after I took office. As mayor, I worked with many other politicians and was totally surprised by how many of them never prepared for their reelection campaign until they filed their petitions. I explained to many of them that they needed to put on programs and events between election cycles to help them get reelected.
