Description:

INTRODUCTION Much as the authors would like to think it could be, this book is not the ultimate Industrial handbook. In a musical movement which has still to reach its peak, in terms of both music and population, new bands are breaking through constantly and the work of other, perhaps defunct, acts is being re-evaluated daily. Our own first draft of this book contained barely more than half the entries now included; it was only as we delved into the huge canon of music and articles which have grown up around the bands we did include, that the full magnitude of the project became apparent. From the first electronic pioneers to the latest ambient dreamers, through the Avant Garde to the prophetically Progressive, the roots of Industrial Music are dug in deep - so deep that already one or the other of us is regretting the decision to omit Captain Beef heart and Frank Zappa. And what of those classicists whose work, whilst not falling into even the most loosely defined rock'n'rolI schism, has nevertheless had lasting influence - Steven Reich, John Cage, Philip Glass and so forth? Absence from these pages does not necessarily denote absence from the scene. Such notable omissions notwithstanding, filed alphabetically within these pages can be found (almost) every major mover on the current Industrial scene, a handful of our own "tips for the top", and around the edges, the vast array of talent which, in some way or another, can be considered influential - which was another area of conflict, and one for which neither of us will now apologize. Also absent, but of immeasureable importance nevertheless, are the many compilations which have introduced to the world some of the scene's most enduring
