The Hunky Dory (Wind, Waves and Away Series)
Description:
THE HUNKY DORY is the second in the six-volume WIND, WAVES & AWAY! SERIES written by Bess C. Haskell of Tenants Harbor, Maine. Bess, who was born September 9, 1896, wrote these books in the early '20s to read to her own children. Bess & her husband, Henry Haskell, both taught school for many years & co-founded the first interracial summer camp for children in Maine in the '40s. In 1936, while teaching in a private school, Henry read the books to his students, who loved them. Each of the six books centers around the adventures of two children & a different water craft. The children, Dan & Margaret Currier, learn the proper handling of each boat--raft, dory, sailboat, canoe, motorboat & schooner--through a series of misadventures. Their pet dog & cat always join, & sometimes, cause the fun. From their parents, the children also learn the essential family values prevalent at the turn of the century. After 1936, these stories were lost for many years. When they resurfaced in the early '80s, Bess revised them for publication. The first book, THE RAFT, was published in 1988. Every page of THE HUNKY DORY is beautifully illustrated with line drawings.
