For Love of the Island

This book is a record of Nantucket's beauty, kept intact by its inhabitants wisdom, generosity, and tenacity. Those of us who live on Nantucket or spend much time here have come to know unique natural places on the island. It has a collection of them, and they change through the seasons and the Grey Lady's moods. You Can see them on these pages. In 1963 some wise islanders, knowing the richness and fragility of what we've got here and sensing the velocity of change that was coming, established the Nantucket Conservation Foundation to preserve those places. THat's what this book does too. Mostly in color photos but also in words, it captures the look of natural Nantucket and the views that brighten our memories. It tells about the people who, through the Foundation, saved a third of the island and are intently preserving the wild things of all kinds that live on it. Some of the best photographers on the island contributed to this book. Thoughtful Nantucket writers produced essays and expert descriptions of the natural places that have been preserved. "For Love of the Island" is testimony to Something That Went Right. It is a feast to the eyes, a comfort to the mind, and an inspiration to this generation and those that will follow.
