This is the story of a tiny settlement on the Salt River and of those pioneers who conquered a hostile environment and built the foundation for Phoenix, now the ninth largest city in the U.S.A. It is also the story of Lulu Clifton- her vision. her courage. her compassion, her dedication-and of the tiny hospital she started to provide "suitable accommodations. nursing. medical and surgical treatment of any person suffering from any physical disability irrespective of sex. color. race. religious belief or pecuniary circumstances." In these pages you will meet the men and women who conquered drought and flood and isolation. Most of them were born in other places. To heal the sick and mend the injured they created four hospitals; St. Joseph's, St. Luke's, Good Samaritan and John C. Lincoln. At the turn of the century, tuberculosis was the dread disease. Knowing not what else to do. the doctors advised sufferers to seek a more benign climate There is evidence to suggest it was the health seekers" who were responsible for much of Arizona's growth and development. They came to die-doctors lawyers. capitalists. educators, nurses and businessmen. The abundant sunshine and the clean dry air. helped them to conquer their affliction and they stayed to build a new community and a new state. Lulu Clifton was a "lunger." - one of thousands who came to Arizona Terrtory for reasons of health. ln these pages she takes her place in a parade of men and women who braved the uncertainties of this new frontier, survived and lived to serve. such as Colonel William Christy, Moses Hazeltine Sherman, Dr. Ferdinand Angeny, Benjamin Austin,Fowler,.
