It is the publisher's hope that the Christian world will someday realize how it has profited from George MacDonald's sermons. Books like Mere Christianity could never have been written without them, as C. S. Lewis has plainly told us: "My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe another: and nearly all serious inquirers to whom I have introduced it acknowledge that it has given them great help--sometimes indispensable help towards the very acceptance of the Christian faith." These writings are far too important to be kept locked in a handful of rare book vaults beyond the reach of the world. All serious inquirers, whether they be the greatest scholars or the simplest laymen, may, like Lewis himself, find George MacDonald's sermons indispensable to themselves and to all Christendom.
