A brief glimpse of Grand Teton National Park is all that is needed to substantiate the wisdom of Abraham Lincoln. He was persuaded that our scenic resources were neither unlimited nor indestructible. In 1862 he had the courage to set aside a piece of wilderness in far off California, "for public use, resort, and recreation" with the intention that they "shall be inalienable for all time." His proclamation and subsequent legislation, in 1872, establishing Yellowstone National Park became the foundation for our present National Park system. To be in Grand Teton National Park is to confront a spectacular mountain range. The quality of your encounter is directly proportional to the amount of time spent in the presence of these "cathedrals." It seems a great injustice to tarry but briefly at a roadside rest along the Rockefeller Parkway because this Park is much, much, much more than just magnificent mountains. It is a delicate arrangement of wildlife, plants, water, geology, and human history. Grand Teton National Park has been set aside as a place to observe the interaction and succession of a physical environment and the plants and animals living there with minimum impact from mankind. It is up to each of us to invest the time to discover and enjoy.
