That's Not Entirely True: An Album of Fotoverigraphs

A book of Fotoverigraphs and a discussion of the role of the photograph. A photograph is not narrative. As the photojournalist Alex Webb said, I have real questions about the still photograph's ability to explain. Photographs always give you a feel of how something looks, but they don't teach or analyze - they present situations. They're bits of moments puled out of time. Most people look at photographs objectively and subjectively and don't differentiate between the two. Do you remember the famous photo by Eddie Adams of the Saigon police chief holding a gun to a Viet Cong officer in street clothes and the police chief is firing the gun into the man's head? It's a very powerful photograph, but very little of that information is actually in the photograph. The information came from the captions. Without that information, we could easily believe the photograph could have been shot in Bangkok. In Singapore. In Phnom Penh. In Paris. Maybe it was a cuckold finding his wife's lover. It could be a still from a Bruce Lee film, or an outtake from Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. The possibilities are endless, and fotoverigraphs explore how we view photographs -- objectivity and subjectivity, looking and seeing. They began as 23x30 inch lithographs and later were incorporated into the book That's Not Entirely True.
