The Montreal Locomotive Works built over 4,000 steam locomotives between 1904 and 1949, from the small 0-4-0 tank types to the massive 2-10-4 Selkirks of the Canadian Pacific Railway, said to be the most powerful locomotives in the British Commonwealth. After 1948, MLW assembled over 3,000 diesel-electric locomotives, for both domestic and international markets. Bombardier assumed control in 1975, and as of 1983, was one of the three largest builders in North America. This publication brings you 110 of the very best representative builders photographs ( full-page size) of steam and diesel-electric locomotives built over the past fifty illustrious years (pre-1983) of locomotive production in Montreal, Quebec. Most of these photographs are from the collection of James W. Kerr and reflect some of the most beautiful and powerful steam and diesel-electric locomotives operated in Canada, or indeed, in North America. The book is laid out representing the Canadian domestic market, in alphabetical order of the largest railways, steam locomotives preceding diesel-electrics, followed by shorter railways, with every locomotive, listed in ascending numerical order.
