Contrary to the title, this book is the autobiography of Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard, one of the most influential member of early 19th-century Chicago. He began his career as a fur trader, working his way up to a major land speculator in the Upper Midwest. No study of Chicago history can be undertaken without an examination of Hubbard's role in the development of the city. This book is an invaluable tool for such research. This book is a reprint (1981) of a 1911 reprint of a 1888 publication from Hubbard's diary manuscript held by the Chicago Historical Society. The 1888 publication was intended as a memorial volume only for Hubbard's family. The 1911 reprint was published for a wider audience as was its 1988 reprint.
