Glasgow School of Art: the History
Released: Jan 01, 1995
Format: Hardcover, 239 pages
Description:
Description from the book flap: Glasgow school of Art has become synonymous with Charles Rennie Mackintosh's most celebrated building, while CRM is perhaps the School's most celebrated former pupil. However, Mackintosh's stature has tended to overshadow the earlier period of the School's history when it made an important contribution to technical education and the local economy. The work of the Glasgow Girls and Glasgow Boys, old and new, continues to attract attention, more markedly in the field of the fine arts than in design and architecture. This book is the first full-length history of the School to be published. Hugh Ferguson details the development of the School from its original purposes, a government School of Design to assist local industry, through the widening of the curriculum in response to changes in local industry and the development of Fine Art teaching. Towards the end of the 19th century the crafts appear and the first organised course in Architecture in the city, leading to a full-time School of Architecture and a connection with the University. By 1901 the School was an independent institution awarding its own Diplomas.
