Only one thing is clear: that the men of Fifth Army fought a hard, long battle against the enemy, the weather, and the terrain; and that they won. Just how they went about winning and what the stages of the battle were it is the purpose of this book to recount. 'Salerno to the Alps' is essentially a condensation of the nine-volume Fifth Army History, which was prepared in full accordance with the principles of historical scholarship; the sources of the latter work are described briefly in the Bibliographical Note at the end of this volume.
