This volume may be used as a text in neurology courses and is designed to be a reference for physicians and house officers who manage patients with cerebrovascular disorders and stroke. For this updated fifth edition, Dr Toole has invited colleagues to contribute chapters in specialized areas such as atherosclerosis of the cervicocranial arteries, ultrasound and cerebrovascular disease, neurorehabilitation, strokes during youth, and diseases of the brain veins. This edition highlights advances in the use of MRI, CT, and other noninvasive imaging techniques for early diagnosis. Attention is paid to the status of carotoid endarterectomy, including results from two trials, ACAS and NASCET. Coverage also includes information on neuroprotective agents, thrombolytics, and the use of vitamins for stroke prevention.
