This work is the diary of James Rives Childs during the time he served the ARA representative in Kazan in the Autonomous Tatar Republic, one of the worst areas of famine. The diary provides a singular view of the early years of the revolution as its American author interacted with local politicians and witnessed the early months of Lenin's New Economic Policy.
