Careers in Theory and Experience
Description:
This book tells what happens in terms of career development during the 20 years following the 8th grade. The first 20-year longitudinal study of career development in America in the post-World War II period to have reached publication stage, it is also the only such study that includes women in its sample. The research was designed to test the best theoretical formulations available. Its findings provide clear and convincing tests of exisitng developmental theory, support useful extensions of theory, and stimulate hypotheses for future research.
Two important aspects of the research program are the production of a new measurement technique for scaling vocational maturity in adolescents, and refinement of an innovative statistical methodology for career development modeling. The new measurement device, entitled “Readiness for Career Planning,” is applicable to both counseling/guidance programs and research programs.
The statistical strategy combining multiple discriminant analysis and Markov chain analysis in a coherent modeling procedure is a major innovation in data analysis procedures for research on careers. Beyond these technical contributions, the book is highly readable on a non-technical level. It provides provocative and helpful insights into the experience of developing careers in America to readers in many walks of life.
Appended to this study is a NEW READINESS FOR CAREER PLANNING (RCP) INSTRUMENT AND MANUAL, for use by the school counselor and educational psychologist.
