Description:

Since its publication in 2007, the Early Dated Coins of Europe 1234-1500 has become the worldwide reference for early dated coinage. Whether a sale occurs in Europe or America, early dated coins are overwhelmingly sold using Levinson reference numbers. There are over 150 new pieces to add to the corpus of (now) over 1250 known types and subtypes (a type being a particular date and denomination issued by a state or ruler, while a subtype is a major variation on that type). There are over 500 updates to catalogue descriptions, as well as more than 200 new photographs added, and with an all-color edition, the photographs much better represent the coins than was possible in the First Edition. When the First Edition was published in 2007, it gave newfound and due attention to this little-known and sorely unappreciated subset of medieval numismatics. It raised the prices of such coins considerably. There is now a widespread understanding that a rare early dated coin may be a once-in-a-generation entry to the marketplace – thus, the coin is fully photographed and described notwithstanding its less-than-pristine condition. The content of the Second Edition has been significantly enhanced by the welcome inclusion of significant new research that has come on the numismatic scene in the past 12 years. Outstanding new broad references on Burgundian Netherlands coinage are now available, as are ones for more limited topics. All of these new references (and more) are included in an extensive annotated bibliography at the back of the book. The catalogue portion has been substantially enhanced, not only by the inclusion of more than 150 new types and subtypes, but by a more exacting approach to the description of each and every one of the 1250 + listings. A number of new subtypes were recognized and assigned their own unique subnumbers. As a result, the catalogue portion contains changes and updates to well over 500 existing entries, even if just to adjust the punctuation. We hope this will make this book even more useful than before. Also, following a number of helpful comments, the definition of a “subtype” has now been broadened. Pieforts and off-metal strikes now have their own subnumbers, as do coins with significantly rotated legends. Such pieces correctly garner significant interest when appearing in auction sales and this book acknowledges such interest.
