Description:

This present work does not approach a critical analysis of the whole problem of the Gospels, but for the time being examines only its most highly controversial and therefore most essential feature, the synoptic problem. There are only two basic solutions to the synoptic problem. In 1794, Johann Gottfried Eichhorn, who was highly praised in his time (1752-1827), had already posed the most famous alternative: "Either the three Gospel writers made ue of one another, or they depended on a common source". If the originators of the Marcan hypothesis, the whole gospel of Mark has been excepted from the works of Matthew and Luke, now set about proving the opposite, namely, that Matthew and Luke had used the Gospel of Mark as a source, it may be appropriate to stress the problems and the fundamental difficulties which face researchers who attempt to make the Marcan hypothesis seem convincing.
