Along with this text, the editor has supplied background information: introductory essay, annotation of the Journal itself, appendix supplying relevant documents about the prison conditions, and the fates of some of the people who are mentioned by James in the journal. Also included are a number of contemporary photographs and drawings, depicting life on board ship during the Civil War, as well as life-and death-, in the prison camps.
