Dr. Edmund Bergler (1899-1962), internationally known psychoanalytic psychiatrist and author, practiced for thirty-five years in Vienna and New York. Trained in Vienna, he was on the staff of the Psychoanalytic Freud-Clinic there for ten years, the last four as Assistant Director. Between 1942 and 1945, he was a lecturer at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. He was active in scientific forums, and on radio and television. He published nearly 300 papers in twelve countries, and twenty-five books on the theory and treatment of neurosis, many translated abroad. The Bergler correspondence, manuscripts and papers are maintained by the psychiatric foundation which he conceived to continue his work on psychic masochism.
