Spanish and Mexican Records of the American Southwest: A Bibliographical Guide to Archive and Manuscript Sources
Description:
From the preface: "The challenge of presentation in this book has arisen in bringing together a historical account of the acquisition, preservation, and publication, by American institutions and individuals, of the original records created by Spanish and Mexican officials in what became the American Southwest, from the beginning of settlement in the early 1600s to the mid-nineteenth century. The historical treatment primarily concerns public records that have been preserved in official custody. Provincial records were accumulated at Santa Fe, San Antonio, and Monterey, but there were departmental headquarters, military headquarters, and many municipalities, presidios, and missions throughout the Southwest where records also accumulated. Descriptive information regarding the records, derived from a wide variety of finding aids and other publications, is included, and records of the Franciscan and Jesuit missions are also described."
