This 'capsule' index telescopes the pageant of 19th-century American life. Similar in approach and format to the first two volumes of the series (17th and 18th centuries), this third volume indexes 161 books, a representative selection usually found in major public, school, and academic libraries. Books for young adults are included, two-thirds published in the last two decades. The author includes 5,000 different subjects, stressing family and home life, the arts, education, sports and recreation, science, clothing, and furniture, and many famous personalities, including Native Americans and women.
