A Complete History of Guam

Here for the first time is a comprehensive and eminently readable history of this fateful island, presenting the full sweep of its engrossing history. The eminently qualified authors of this work have spent years of studious research in gathering and working over the voluminous source material upon which the book is based. Though comprehensive and scholarly, it is neither exhaustive nor exhausting. Its presentation is factual, well-balanced and temperate, succinctly written in an easy style certain to win the appreciation of students using it as a textbook as well as the casual reader enjoying this excursion into a small but vital far-away land about which little is generally known. Paul Carano, at the time of publication a member of the faculty at the College of Guam, had been intensely interested in the collection of basic source material on the island and in the preparation of a comprehensive history of Guam ever since he first started teaching there in 1947. His interest increased to the point where he finally spent two uninterrupted years and considerable personal funds in completing the research and in working over his vast accumulation of pertinent and frequently difficult-to-procure source material. Though anxious at first to complete the understanding himself, he was most appreciative of the indispensable and extensive cooperation of Pedro C. Sanchez in bringing this panoramic project to its successful completion. Dr. Sanchez, who travelled extensively throughout Southeast Asia and the North American continent, was a native Guamanian, the son of an outstanding Guamanian educator, and himself a former President of the College of Guam as well as a former Commissioner of Education in the Virgin Islands. At the time of publication he was serving as Associate Director of the Peace Corps in the Philippines.
