In early 1944, 12 of 16 enlisted man passed a crash course for Naval officer candidacy and were commissioned as ensigns; one more made warrant officer. But all of them made history, as the U.S. Navy's first African-American officers on active duty. Known as the Golden Thirteen, they are true pioneers in military history. This book profiles this courageous group and recalls in their own words how each maintained his dignity, pride and humor, in the face of prejudice and condescension.
