Culloden

Amid showers of sleet, on April 16, 1746, the last pitched battle to be fought on British soil was waged as 5,400 men of the Scottish Highland army fought 8,000 British army regulars. Not only did it mark the final ruin of the Jacobite cause that had erupted sporadically since the ousting of James II of England in 1689, but it also witnessed the bitter death knell of the Highland clans. The book tells the story of the people who fought there, how they came to stand as they did on that snowy heath, what motivated them, and who led them there. It is also an account of what happened on the day, a minute-by-minute chronicle of Britain's last battle and one of her bloodiest. The account draws heavily on contemporary source material, some of which has not received a full airing in the past. This is the most up-to-date narrative history of this famous Scottish battle.
