Performance of Materials in Buildings: A Study of the Principles and Agencies of Change

Developing topics from Lyall Addleson's classic Materials for building series (1972), this is a detailed study of the relationship between the materials used in building constructions and the conditions in which they are expected to perform with regard to strength and water and its effects. The authors have developed five principles for building intended as an aid to memory to assist in the design and detailing of buildings. Where one or more principles cannot be followed, the concept of compensation dictates the action required to minimize the risk of building failure. A large amount of diversified information has been gathered to give a systematic and comprehensive treatment of the subject. Much use is made of comparative charts, diagrams, and photographs, to guide all who are concerned with building performance, including architects, construction engineers, building surveyors, and estate managers.
