This book offers new perspectives on the economic development of Europe during the critical period of industrialization for much of the continent, from 1750-1914. It eschews the traditional approach of studying the major countries, nation-by-nation and replaces it with a continent-wide thematic study which deals with each of the main economic sectors in turn. The separate chapters cover the macro-economy, agriculture, demography, enterprise, technology, transport, investment, urbanization and foreign trade. Each chapter is written by a specialist in that particular sector of the European economy and brings together in a concise and clear manner the latest research in the area. The contributors offer new insights into the developments of each of these economic sectors, and also provide a cohesive and balanced assessment of the inter-relationship between sectors and the overall trends during two vital centuries.
