In war, heroism comes from ordinary people doing extraordinary things at a time when everything they love is at stake and their very lives are at risk. In the chronicles of these heroic deeds the contributions of women have too often been ignored. Eric Taylor sets out to correct this oversight. Drawing on firsthand accounts and face-to-face interviews he records the experiences of many valiant women including Joanna Stavridi the Nightingale of Crete; Margot Turner the nurse who survived a Japanese POW camp; and Diana Rowden who served in Nazi-occupied France and was executed at Natzweiler.
