By the magnetism of his personality, Wingate was able to forge out of an ill-assorted bunch of men a fighting force which became a legend. Philip Stibbe recounts the brief part he played as a young officer in Chindit operations. He describes their training and the way in which Wingate prepared them for the ordeals ahead. Alas, Stibbe ended up a prisoner of the Japanese. How he managed to survive the appalling sadism of his captors in the following years is extraordinary.
