Before the publication of M. Ordin's translation the author of the present work had consulted the Russian and Finnish archives concerning the relations between Russia and Finland during the period 1721 - 1809, and especially concerning the final settlement which took place in 1809 1. In consequence we felt inclined im mediately to meet M. Ordin's attack, but there were circumstances which made it seem advisable to wait.
