Big Bow: The Spiritual Life and Teachings of a Kiowa Family

In this book, an anthropologist and a Kiowa elder explore some of the history, spiritual beliefs and practices of the Kiowa people as expressed through the family history of Chief Big Bow (1833-1901). It also explores the five major Kiowa roads walked upon by author Richard Tartsah (Big Bow's great great grandson) during his varied and unusual life. These are peyote religion, Tartsah's work as a medicine man, his involvement with traditional Kiowa songs and dances, his deep insights into the spirituality behind the Ghost Dance movement, and his lifelong involvement in Kiowa Christianity. The book includes a cd of songs and discussions by Richard Tartsah which accompany the major topics of the text.
