Toward Literacy: Theory and Applications for Teaching Writing in the Content Areas

Toward Literacy is a resource and how-to guide for teaching writing in the content areas. It explains, clarifies and categorizes major approaches to using writing in the content areas. It explores the reading/writing connection, thinking skills and literacy. It examines the relevant theory, research, methods and materials for teaching content writing and provides examples for program implementation. Based on the premise that literacy involves the ability to use language effectively through writing and reading, Toward Literacy is divided into three parts. Part I explores the process of writing and various teaching approaches. Part ll explores the reading/writing/thinking connection and uses of writing to improve study skills. Part III explores professional development. It includes chapters on writing and computers; setting up content writing programs; strategies and assessment.
