The third edition of this enormously successful textbook follows in the footsteps of the previous two editions by providing the student with a thorough understanding of the origins and nature of real landforms encountered in the landscape. Building on its highly praised analytical and critical approach, the book has been revised in the light of the present state of explanatory theory where this seems to represent a real gain in knowledge. New material, including photographs and diagrams, has been added, but established theories have not been abandoned for new ones where the latters' only merit is novelty. A completely new chapter on denudation rates has been added to help the reader in adjusting from short historical time to the very long geological time scales involved in landform study. The book retains the essential character that has established it as the leading textbook in the field since its first publication in 1960 and will, therefore, keep its wide appeal to university students of geography and geology and also to advanced sixth-form students and their teachers. The revisions and additions to this third edition will greatly enhance its value, and further consolidate its position.
