An Afternoon Walk

A woman has been kidnapped and is believed to have been driven through the streets of the tidy little suburban town of Collingham. This and police questioning sets the neighborhood by the ears during these hot, brooding days of early summer. But it was the atmosphere in her own home that most upset Ella; threats from an unknown telephone caller, the feeling of being under surveillance and, above all, her distant husband's contention that she was becoming increasingly fanciful, forgetful and not careful enough of Kitty, their little daughter.Rising doubts and fears force Ella into the confidence of her neighbor, Booth Bramwell. Maybe the heat was affecting her, but surely she hadn't imagined the dustcloud up at the deserted house on the day of the kidnapping? It seemed that more than Ella's memory was failing her.
