Illustrator's resource file: Over 800 copyright free illustrations by the finest illustrators of the 19th and 20th centuries

The illustrators represented on these pages make up a veritable "Who's Who" of turn of the century talent. Frederick Remington, Howard Pyle, Gustave Doré, Oliver Herford, Reginald Birch, George Varian, A.B. Frost, W.H. Drake, Aubrey Beardsley and other less known, but enormously talented illustrators are featured in this book. The cover illustration was done by Alfred Fredericks to illustrate the fairy tale, "Rumpty Dudget's Tower" (written by Julian Hawthorne in 1878). This engraving done in a loose, pen sketch style is a personal favorite of the author. The large sketch on page 98 and the drawing at the top right on page 100 were done by Edwin Austin Abbey, considered by his peers to be the foremost illustrator of his day.These 800 illustrations were collected from a variety of sources. A real attempt was made to find material that had not been reprinted in the 20th century. The fine magazines published for both adults and children during the latter part of the 19th century and the early 20th century carried the bulk of the illustrations used. Harpers Weekly, St. Nicholas, The Century Magazine and Muncie's Magazine all contained treasures of illustrative material. Books that carried excellent artwork were Hill's Manual (printed 1884), The Knockabout Club in Spain (printed 1889), Ridpath's History of the United States (circa 1897) and many others.The uses of this book are as varied as the illustrations contained within. It is most certainly useful to the student of illustration and the advertising artist. Collage has become an important art form and the assembled illustrations will work well as collage material.
