Painting and Drawing Water

This book looks at how water can be depicted effectively in landscape painting. Artists take a particular pleasure in portraying water in many forms, and find it one of the most expressive, satisfying-and difficult-subjects to draw and paint. Norman Battershill, a professional painter, talks about the different aspects of water and its many moods-in movement, when still, reflections and shallows. He stresses always that attention must be given to creating atmosphere, to tonal harmonies and careful composition if the painting is to become a successful whole. And through thoughtful discussions of his own paintings, he helps readers to develop their interpretive and technical skills. The author encourages experiment with all different mediums: he includes demonstrations to illustrate his working methods, and the book is lavishly illustrated with a great variety of sketches, studies and finished paintings. It will be a source of both pleasure and instruction for all landscape painters. Norman Battershill is a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of British artist in Pastel Society. He has tutored the Pitman correspondence course in pastel, has given painting illustrations for Windsor and Newton to many art clubs and societies, and has featured in Windsor and Newton film on acrylics. He has also run many of his own training courses, has contributed many articles to The Artist magazine, and has written a number of art instruction books, including Painting and Drawing Skies. His work has been shown at the Royal Academy, RBA, ROI, NEAC, Pastel Society, John Nevill Gallery, Felpham Galleries, Compton Galleries, and reproduced as greeting cards and fine art prints. His commissions include drawings for post office stamp books, line and wash illustrations for Newsweek International, and oil paintings for the Post Office, CBA GEIGY, Ricardo Engineering, and Beecham Group. His work are in public and private collections worldwide.
