The Economics of International Integration

This book presents a concise yet wide-ranging introduction to the economics of international integration. It takes stock of the relevant literature from a number of streams of analysis that are often kept separate, and brings them jointly to bear on the issues in a novel way, that underlines the necessity for recognising dimensions of the subject that are often neglected. The approach is largely analytical but it is placed firmly in the context of contemporary issues both in the European Community, Africa, Latin America and Asia. For the third edition the book has been completely revised and rewritten and it is entirely up to date in its coverage of relevant theory, policy issues and statistical data. The original analysis of customs union theory, free trade areas, common markets, monetary integration and the special issues of integration among developing economies and centrally planned economies has been supplemented by new sections on intra-industry trade, corporate integration and by an entirely new chapter on fiscal policy and budgetary issues. The book also takes account of the plans to complete the European Common Market by 1992 and of the current budgetary problems of the Community.
