Contemporary feminist theatres: To each her own (Gender and performance)

"Contemporary Feminist Theatres" is part social history of feminism and part exploration of the links between academic and practical approaches to the theatre. It examines the development of many different feminist theatres since 1969 and considers some of the most recent shifts in feminist and cultural theory today. The author looks closely at the representation of women, feminists, lesbians, black women and women of colour engaged in the act of representing "self" in both theatre and everyday life. It looks at unpublished texts and rehearsed readings as well as published plays, and much of the material is taken from original interviews with key directors, actors and writers. Because so many practitioner's voices are heard "Contemporary Feminist Theatres" should be directly relevant in the rehearsal room as well as the classroom.
