The book includes scripts and illustrations from the first series of Dinnerladies, plus new writing by Victoria Wood. Dinnerladies is about five women who work in the canteen of a factory outside Manchester. They come to work, they put on their overalls, they fanny about with their bean tins, they serve the dinners, they wash up, they go home. But within that daily routine they bicker, fall out, run into the toilet crying, plan romances, weigh themselves, fantasise, and try and read the telly pages without their glasses. Bren (Victoria Wood) is the strong centre of the group. She actually enjoys scraping bits of dinner into plastic dustbins. The only bluebottle in her custard is her mother Petula Gordeno (Julie Walters). And, oh what a mother! Serving alongside Bren are Jean, Dolly, Anita and Twinkle, the other dinnerladies. Plus Tony and Stan, the men who make life interesting.
